planning: For this project I know I wanted it to be a square face and a face with a tongue.
construction: For the construction of the piece I started by wedding the clay into a ball and flattening it out with a rolling pin. Then I proceeded to shape the eye sockets, followed by scoring the clay and placing eyeballs in. After that I formed the eyebrows, chin, lips, nose and smoothed out the face. Lastly, I carved out the bottom so it would be able to go through the kiln. But I didn't end up firing it because I didn't like the way it turned out.
reflection: What went well was how easy it was to smooth out the clay and make the lips. Something that was hard to form was the nose, it took a while to get an okay shape. I like how it was different and made in my own way. If i were to do this assignment again I would change the shape of the face and not have a tongue sticking out. I would also change how I finished making the nose, I would have made it bigger and the nostrils would be more obvious.
Face Project
Useful Slab with underglaze
Planning: while planning this piece I has the idea of making a coaster that was useful for me to use at home with some underglaze. I dont have any inspo pictures because it just came to mind when thinking of this project.
Description of construction process: When i started this process, I took a slab of clay and started to shape it into a heart. Then after I got the shape and smoothed and leveled it out, I took a flat knife and started to make lines for the checkers. Then after I got all my lines even I took many different colors of pink and red underglaze and I painted different boxes. Lastly, I took a clean wet paintbrush and went along the lines to clean up the paint.
Reflection: For this project what went really well was, smoothing the piece and making my squares. I found it relatively eay to use the underglaze it was just very time consuming. Sadly, after putting my artwork on the greenware shelf and waiting for it to be fired, I came back to class to find it in the broken tub. This piece never got fired or glazed because while in its leather-hard stage it broke. lastly, if I were able to do this project again I would make the coaster a little bit more smoother and precise. And I would select less colors to use to paint the heart.
